College Visit Reflections

As my junior year approaches, I'm starting to think about where I want to go after high school. This summer I've visited three colleges, with plans to go to more in the near future. After spending days at RISD and Yale, here is what I've learned so far, and what I need to do during future visits.

1. // Attend the information sessions.

When I was first registering for college visit programs, I wasn't overly excited about the idea of an hour-long info session. I figured that if I was going on a campus tour, I would get all the information I needed from the tour guide, and any questions I still had I could just look up online. However, the more info sessions I attended, the more I realized how valuable they are (even if they can get a little boring). Often, they are run by admissions officers at the university and they can tell you first-hand what you need to do to make your application stand out. The sessions can also be valuable because they provide you with the opportunity to listen to other's questions, which may be ones you wouldn't have thought to ask.

2. // Take notes.

You'll be receiving so much information on a college visit that it's a good idea to write down the things that are important to you. I used the notes app on my phone, but you can write things in a notebook or even record things if you want - whatever works for you. I thought that I would remember the details of my first visit, but a few days later I had forgotten a lot of what I'd learned while there. If I hadn't taken notes, I would have lost so much of the information I had gained.

3. // Come with questions.

There are almost always multiple opportunities to ask questions on a college visit, and the answers you get will be from people who really know what they're talking about. If there are any questions you can't find the answers to or anything you want to know in general, a college visit is one of your best resources to get answers.

4. // Be open-minded, and take things with a grain of salt.

At the end of the day, the people you meet during your college visit are in love with their school, and they'll want you to love it, too. Remember to really think about whether or not you could see yourself at the college and if the environment is right for you. You're going to spend some of the most important four years of your life there, so it's important to take the time to make sure you'll be happy! By the same token, be open-minded about each school you visit. You may come to their campus with preconceived ideas, but sometimes seeing things in person can completely change your outlook. It's definitely worth taking the time to see what a school has to offer -- you won't regret it!
