After making it a goal of mine to explore and really get to know Philadelphia, the city where I go to college, I've realized that I need to spend more time in DC. If you live in/near a city for a long time, you can probably relate to feeling like you've seen it all and trying to avoid "touristy" areas at all cost. That was certainly what I had been trying to do, but becoming a tourist-resident (can I coin that term?) of Philly has made me realize that I've been missing out on all the great things my home city has to offer, all in some kind of effort to avoid the crowds. So, the past few weekends I've been hopping on the metro and visiting different places around the city, old and new.

The only problem? It's been boiling in DC lately. If you're at all familiar with the area you're probably thinking "it's hot in DC in the summer? what else is new". That's true, it's always this hot and humid, and normally Washingtonians just kind of deal with the hot weather. And that's fine and dandy if you're inside an AC office all day, but if you're walking around it's brutal - especially if you get inside and it feels like the arctic circle. I've taken to wearing two different outfit combinations:

(1) lightweight dresses, and
(2) shorts + lose cotton button-down.

In both cases, it's a great idea to wrap a throw-it-on sweater or sweatshirt around your waist if you're planning to head indoors at any point, or for riding public transport where it can be chilly. And again, in both cases, definitely wear a good pair of sneakers. These are a new pair of mine that are currently on a major, major sale from Tory Sport. They're insanely comfortable and the ruffle detail really sold me.
